Unimposing yet Dignified

Gurler House , Dekalb Il

Collaboration with Veronica Storject by Veronica Storc and Erinn Stuart features two life-size abstracted portrait/self-portraits created using the exquisite corpse technique. Constructed on metal armatures, the sculptures evolve through an alternating creative process, blending each artist's contributions into dynamic, composite forms that examine the layered nature of identity—how we see ourselves versus how others see us.  Rooted in Terrain Biennial’s ethos of activating front yards and unconventional public spaces, the sculptures will be installed in close dialogue with their environment and each other. Their presence in an open, lived-in landscape invites both intentional viewers and casual passersby to engage with the work in an unmediated, everyday context. Natural elements—sunlight, shadows, weather, and time—will become collaborators in the work, subtly altering how the sculptures are experienced from day to day.  By merging personal interpretation with external influence, the project speaks to the Terrain Biennial’s mission of blurring the line between private and public, artist and viewer. These abstract figures not only reflect on the complexities of identity but also on how place, community, and environment shape perception and meaning.
